Situated on a Peninsula, Trincomalee is a major port city located in the eastern province of Sri Lanka. Trincomalee is one of the world’s finest harbours, and is the 4th largest natural harbour in the world. This natural harbour which was attracted by traders, seafarers and pilgrims from Europe, Middle East, Africa, China, East Asia and Australasia since ancient times, has been a seaport since 400 BCE. With many Hindu sites of historical importance, Trincomalee is a sacred city to Sri Lankan Tamils and Hindus around the world.
