Tissamaharama is a town situated in the Hambantota district. Dating back to the 3rd Century B.C., Tissamaharama was the capital of the kingdom of Ruhuna. Tissamaharama is notable for a reservoir named “Tissa Wewa” thought to be constructed in the 3rd century B.C, and the “Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara” constructed by King Kavan Tissa during the 2nd century B.C.
