THE TRADITIONAL FISHING TOWN
Situated on the west coast, Negombo is well known for its centuries old fishing industry. The city was also known for cinnamon cultivation. During the Portuguese colonial era, a large number of the people who were previously Hindu and Buddhist were converted into Catholicism, resulting almost two third of its population to be Catholic. Due to this Negombo is known as “The Little Rome”. Negombo is also the only city that has the most Churches in Sri Lanka. The heritage from the Dutch colonial era can be seen in Negombo
