HISTORIC MATARA

Matara is the largest city in the Matara district, and the second largest in the southern province. Matara historically belonged to the kingdom of Ruhuna, and is home to many historic attractions. This bustling coastal city, has been occupied several times throughout the course of history, by Portuguese, Dutch and the British. Each invasion brought with it new structures, many of which still stand today and provide a window to Sri Lanka’s history.
