Located in the Badulla district, Mahiyanganaya is situated close to the Mahaveli river which is the longest river in Sri Lanka. Mahiyanganaya is a pali word which means flat land. Situated eastward to the steep eastern falls of central hills, the relative flatness of the area can be seen while traveling from Kandy to  Padiyathalawa accross Hunnasgiriya & famous 18 Hairpin bends. According to the chronicles, during his first visit to Sri Lanka, Buddha visited Mahiyanganaya on a Duruthu (January) full moon poya day in order to resolve a dispute between the two tribes Yakkas and Nagas. Where he preached dhamma and gave a fistful of his hair relic to Sumana Saman so that his followers could worship. Later Sumana Saman built a Golden Chethiya and deposited the hair relic in it.
