LOCATION
SIGIRIYA “THE ROCK FORTRESS”
Named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, Sigiriya is a Rock Citadel built by King Kashyapa during the Anuradhapura period. Since he was not the crown prince, King Kashyapa carried out a coup to take the throne from his father King Dhatusena. As a result King Kashyapa entombed his father alive and became the king of Anuradhapura. Later, fearing that his brother King Moggallana would come to take back his right to the throne, King Kashyapa built this Rock Fortress, and moved his capital and residence from Anuradhapura to Sigiriya. Later after the death of King Kashyapa, Sigiriya was used as a monastery until it was abandoned in the 14th century.
