LOCATION

BERUWALA TOWN

Located in the Kalutara district, Beruwala is a large town with a predominant community of Muslims. Beruwala was the place for the first Muslim settlement, established by the Arab traders around the 8th century AD. The Al Abras Mosque of Beruwala is Claimed to be the first mosque in Sri Lanka. Beruwala is derived from the Sinhalese word for the place where the sail is lowered, where “Bae” stands for lowered and “Ruwala” stands for sail.
