LOCATION

THE KINGDOM OF ANURADHAPURA

Founded in the 5th century BCE, Anuradhapura is best known for its ruined ancient city. Anuradhapura has been the capital for many Srilankan kings, until the South Indian invasions forced the capital to be shifted to Polonnaruwa. Anuradhapura was also the birth place of  Srilankan Buddhism. It is said, that Bikkhuni Sangamitta carried a sapling of the Maha Bodhi Tree to Sri Lanka, which was then planted by King Devanampiya Tissa in Anuradhapura.
