LOCATION
MOUNTAIN WITH A SACRED FOOTPRINT
Well known by the locals as Sri Pada (Sacred Footprint) and Samanala Kanda (Mountain of Saman or Mountain of Butterflies), Adam’s Peak is a conical mountain located in central Sri Lanka. The peak of the mountain contains a footprint. Buddhists believe it to be the foot of Buddha, Hindus of Shiva, Muslims of Adam and Christians of St. Thomas. Considered by locals as a sacred mountain, Buddhists revere it as a holy site. During the pilgrimage season which is January – April, people from various parts of the country can be seen in the area.
