SANDY WELIGAMA

Weligama is a small coastal town located in the Matara District. Its name translates to sandy village which depicts its wide stretched sandy beach. Weligama is famous for its coastline due to the sandy beaches that are perfect for surfing. While the main industries are tourism and fishing, Weligama is also known for beeralu bobbing lace making, which was first introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The area is also famous for stilt fisherman.
