Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located near Dambulla town in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It was the location of the capital and royal palace during the reign of King Kasiyappa (477-495 AD), and after the king’s demise the fortress was used as a Buddhist Monastery until the 14th century AD. Sigiriya, which literally translates to ‘Lion Rock’, is dominated by a gateway in the form of an enormous lion, on a small plateau halfway up a massive column of rock rising to a height of over 600 feet.

LOCATION
SIGIRIYA / HABARANA
Today Sigiriya is considered one of the architectural and artistic marvels of ancient times with its still bright frescoes and symmetric and asymmetric elements which intentionally merge the natural and artificial forms of the surroundings. The rock fortress is still so magnificent that it played a part in the TV show Ancient Aliens for its architecture and artwork. The Sigiriya rock palace is accessed by a set of winding stairs that passes between the giant feet of the lion that forms the gateway. Now declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site it is treat that must definitely be seen if one visits Sri Lanka.
